The Best DIY Salt Scrub Recipe – with Himalayan Salt and Essential Oils (1)

Homemade salt scrubs are one of the easiest body products to DIY, yet they are still so luxurious! My favorite salt scrub recipe uses a combination of sea salt and Himalayan salt, plus a nourishing mix of plant based oils.

HOMEMADE BODY SCRUB FOR GLOWING SKIN

A sea salt scrub is an easy and inexpensive way to get glowing skin. Salt scrubs work hard to exfoliate and moisturize dry skin. Exfoliation is so important because it helps to remove dead skin from the surface, can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pores, detoxifies and improves the overall tone of skin.

Oil in the homemade Himalayan salt scrub is easily absorbed once skin is exfoliated. You are left with healthy, soft and radiant skin that glows.

HIMALAYAN SALT SCRUB

I love to include Himalayan pink salt in my DIY salt scrub recipe because it adds an extra boost of nutrients. Himalayan pink salt contains 84 trace minerals and nutrients and I love the pink tint it gives to my homemade salt scrub.

SALT SCRUB VS SUGAR SCRUB

Lots of people wonder what the difference between a salt scrub and a sugar scrub is. The main difference between these two types of body scrubs is the type of exfoliation they provide.

Sugar is almost always finely ground, so will provide a gentle exfoliation in body scrub recipes. I have found brown sugar to be the gentlest exfoliant, and love to make brown sugar scrubs for sensitive skin.

Salt can be ground anywhere from extra fine to course, and the courser the grind the rougher the exfoliation will be. I always prefer a fine ground salt for body scrubs, but do like a slightly courser grind for something like a foot scrub.

In general, sugar scrubs provide a gentler exfoliation than salt scrubs.

HOW DO YOU MAKE AN EXFOLIATING SCRUB

It could not be any easier to make a homemade exfoliating sea salt scrub! It’s a simple combination of salt and oil – it’s all you need for glowing skin!

Note: I use a combination of sea salt and Himalayan salt in this salt scrub recipe, but sticking with a single salt will still give you a wonderful body scrub. Feel free to leave out either of the salts if you don’t have both on hand.

Exfoliating scrubs are great for the entire body, especially dry areas like feet and hands! I have a special recipe just for hands if you’re looking for an exfoliating hand sugar scrub.

WHAT IS THE BEST OIL TO USE IN A BODY SCRUB?

My favorite carrier oil for homemade body scrub is grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil feels less greasy but is still extremely nourishing, which makes it my top pick for a DIY salt scrub.

You should be able to pick up grapeseed oil at a natural grocery store (I got mine at Sprouts in the personal care section). Or it is, of course, available online right here.

I also include almond oil in this salt scrub recipe because it is a rich and healthy oil perfect for dry skin. I really like it combined with the grapeseed oil for a body scrub.

I always like to include jojoba oil in my body product recipes since it is so nourishing and skin LOVES it, so you’ll also find jojoba in this Himalayan salt scrub.

I love to add Vitamin E to my body product recipes as well for a little extra nourishment. A little goes a long way, and you can add it to all kinds of homemade body products!

DIY SALT SCRUB RECIPE

You can find all ingredients to make your own salt scrubs here.

1 cup finely ground sea salt

½ cup Himalayan pink salt (this is the same salt I use in my kitchen instead of regular salt, so I buy it in bulk!)

4 TBS Grapeseed oil

3 TBS Almond oil

1 TBS jojoba oil

10 drops vitamin E

15-20 drops essential oil of choice (see variations below)

HOW TO MAKE SALT SCRUB

  • Measure sea salt and Himalayan salt in a mixing bowl
  • Add in grapeseed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E and essential oils
  • I like to add the essential oils last and put right on top of the oil – I find it incorporates into the salt mixture better this way.
  • Mix until all of the salt is coated with oil. It will not be swimming in oil, just coated.
  • Store in a glass or metal container of your choice. This recipe fills a single pint sized mason jar or 2 half pint jars.

HOW TO USE SALT SCRUB

DIY salt scrub is so easy to use! It is easiest to use your homemade salt scrub in the shower. Simply take a small amount of scrub mixture into your hand and rub on dry skin, then rinse clean with water.

Some of the oil from your Himalayan salt scrub will remain on your skin – just pat it dry once you get out of the shower.

HOW LONG DO HOMEMADE SALT SCRUBS LAST?

If you’re wondering How long does salt scrub last, I have good news for you. Since this salt scrub recipe does not contain any water, it can last up to 6 months. I’d be surprised if it lasts that long though!

Make sure to keep it sealed in a jar with a lid to ensure it stays fresh and free of contaminants. If you keep it in your shower, store your homemade salt scrub away from the water stream to avoid water getting into the jar.
